Locally Sourced: Why It's Important for You and Your Pet

Locally Sourced Ingredients

What does locally sourced mean? Well, the definition of locally sourced ingredients and food products is still up for debate.  When we’re talking about our pet food products, locally sourced usually means within 100 - 150 miles.

What are the Benefits of Local Sourcing?

  • It means getting the freshest food possible.
  • It also means that it has been harvested at the peak of ripeness, since the produce did not have to travel across the country or overseas.
  • Harvested at the peak of ripeness means that all of the nutrients readily available
  • Less travel time also means less of our precious fuel resources were used to get the product to you.
  • Money stays in the local economy.
  • Personal touch – you get to know your farmer.

Knowing where your food comes from has never been more important. We have become complacent. Grocery stores and big box stores are near-by in even the smallest towns. They carry foods and food products from around the globe. You can get virtually any food that you want, whether it is in its growing season or not. That is an amazing thing! But there can also be hidden dangers.

Ingredient labels have to list what is in a product, but they do not have to tell you the source or origin of that ingredient. Large commercial companies maximize profits by purchasing ingredients at the lowest cost possible and that frequently means sourcing ingredients from outside the United States.

According to a recent article in the Huffington Post, the U.S. has approved 4 chicken processing plants in China to export their meat to the United States. China is notorious for problems in its food processing industries. One of the more recent episodes involved dog jerky teats with tainted ingredients imported from China. Just over 600 precious pets died and several thousand became ill after ingesting this treat. This is not the first time this has happened and sadly, it probably won’t be the last. This particular dog jerky treat has been recalled numerous times since the problem was first discovered in 2007.

Our pets are members of our family and their health is as important to us as our own. It sends chills up our spines when we watch the news and hear that hundreds of pets have died because of tainted food. How do we keep our pets from becoming one of the statistics? Be pro-active; know where the ingredients in your pet’s food and treats come from. At Pet Nibbles, we locally source all of the ingredients that go into our pet treats. We test the recipes to make sure that our treats are healthy and taste great; then we deliver them fresh right to your door!
